Just read an article in a past Smithsonian Magazine but I can't remember if was from last December, January or February.
Hey I read a lot material in my line of work.
But if you want a Union General, look up General George Henry Thomas. He was one of the greatest and least known generals of that war. Since he wasn't very political he didn't end up famous like Grant or Sherman but he was a better general than both them.
The article in the Smithsonian is a good start. There's also plenty on the web.

If you wanted just the generals who commanded armies or the commanders-in-chief, it would be a hell of a lot easier, but all generals? There were hundreds.
