I broke my tib and fib just above my ankle 6 weeks ago. I had surgery to pin my fibia and have been in pot for 6 weeks. The cast was removed 3days ago, I was expecting to have a walking pot put on but I was told I didnt need one and to start trying to walk on it. My ankle is very swollen and goes red and purple when I lower my foot to the floor. I can't bear to put any weight on it or put my foot flat to the floor due to the pain so walking is absolutely impossible! There was no mention of physiotherapy at the hospital nor was I given any exercises to help regain movement in my ankle. Is it just a case of elevating my leg until the swelling goes down (how long should this take?) and then I will be able to start to weightbear? Is there something wrong or am I just being a wimp?

Get another Doctor!

You should only do a partial weight bearing on it (maybe 25 lbs pressure), you should be in a rehab (physical therapy), at a minimum taking an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, and you should have been given/doing exercises at home.

Any time you have injuries bad enough for pins it is a long recovery. I have a friend that still has not recovered from a leg break over a year ago. His leg will still swell up on him if he is on it more than a couple hours at a time.

Your Doctor is a quack and you need to take charge and get them treatment you need.

GOOD LUCK!
