It means the buyer/seller has to sell their current property before they can purchase a new one or the person they're buying/selling from or to has to, and so on. It's said to be broken when one of the deals in the chain falls through meaning all the other sales/purchases in the chain can't take place

The chain is the people involved in selling. If you sell your house, the person buying it sells theirs, and the person buying theirs is also selling a house you are all in a chain and reliant on the sale of your houses going through ok. If someone fails to sell then the chain is broken. Its often more attractive to buy a house where there is no chain - the house would be empty and the owners not reliant on buying their next property... Hope this helps!

onward chain means that the vendors of the house you are purchasing have to purchase one for themselves in order to sell,when this breaks down that is what "broken chain " means.No onward chain means they have not got to buy in order to move out and complete the sale.Hope this helps.

the chain is the line of people buying and selling - there might be a first time buyer trying to get a small flat, somebody wating to move from a flat to a small house, another person trying to move from the small house to a large house, and so on.
If one person drops out of the chain, the seller will not be able to move as he will not be able to buy the next house up, and the chain will collapse.

a chain is when you want to sell your house .and the house you have found you want cant move out because the house they have found cant move out because the house they want have to find a house for themselves .etc and so it goes on and on ...if you get in a chain it will drive you barmy
