It's different with every person, though first children tend to come very close to their due date, and subsequent children a little later. I was dilated 2-3 cms for weeks before I went into labor. My mucous plug fell out on Christmas Eve, and my daughter wasn't born until Jan. 7.(two days before she was due) I actually ended up having to have pitocin because my water broke on Jan 6, and 10 hours later, even though I was having contractions, I was still between 2 and 3 cms. Some women don't dilate at all before they go into labor. Even if you do, it doesn't mean labor is coming anytime soon, and it doesn't mean it will be quick. As hard as it is, you have to be patient. Your time will come, and soon. Good luck =)

It's not true for everyone. I had my daughter at 38 weeks and my labor was 2 hours long start to finish. I know I'm an exception to the rule though. My doctor said most first timers go into labor around their due date, or later, and have 12-14 hour labors. It'll be over soon though. You're just about at the end.

I don't know about most first time moms, but I wasn't late. My daughter came 2 1/2 weeks before my due date, and I was already having the beginning signs of labor a week prior to that. But I also think she was running out of room in there!

It's very hard to wait....

I've heard only 5% of women actually deliver on their due date, and that 50% of all first-time Moms go past their due date.

Remember, your body is such a safe, protective little space for your dear darling. There is no hurry to push her out - think of it from a baby's POV. It will be cold, bright, harsh....the womb is a beautiful place and your DD will come when she's ready.

I have had 2 - the first came 2 days before his due date (in 4 hours) and the second came 5 days past her due date, in less than 3 hours.

Good luck! And happy resting.

Labor is a funny thing. One day you might not be dialated at all and go into labor the next (me with my first). And, you might just go into labor the day before you're due date. (me with my first)
You just never know. Couple words of wisdom, though, from a mom of two. Walk, walk, walk... it makes labor MUCH easier, quicker, and is good for you, too. It can even bring on labor! And when you're in labor, try to relax as much as possible. I know that's easier said than done, but with my first, I was anxious, frustrated, scared, etc... My labor was 26 hours with the first one. The second one I got induced. I walked and walked as much as possible, had a positive, calm attitude, and he was born in an hour after my water broke. Was only in pain for an hour. No meds. I'd have 5 if I knew they would all be like that.
One good thing is that you're already dialating. That helps! Walking helps you dialate.
Good luck! Hope all goes well!

No one ever knows exactly when you will deliver. I think that the first time mom delivering late is a myth. It is different for everyone but I just had my 1st child 2 months ago and he actually came before my due date. His due date was Jan 21st and I had him on the 16th. I went to see my doc on a Friday and was dilated 1 cm and had him that following Tuesday!

If you are dilating, it won't be long.
Usually first timers do go over by around a week or so.
Honestly, I know the last few weeks or month you just want that thing out of you, but trust me when I say...GET ALL the sleep you can now. Sit on the sofa. Watch TV. Sleep in. You will be so sorry if you don't.
Oh, but if you really want to get the little sucker out of there..get moving. Go for a good fast, long walk. Somehow it gets the baby moving. Another thing is to drink a few tablespoons of castor oil. My grandma told me about it and it works!!
All the best :)

1st congrats....well being a first time mom is a big thing...I understand why your so exicted.....It all depends on the baby whether she want s to come ina day or two or a week or so..belive me when your in labor you will know it..when they (contractions) first start try walking around to make them come on harder. Once you have had the baby enjoy everey day of it cause they grow up fast...Your life completely changes after your a mom..No more just running into the store you will have to plan around the baby 1st.....

GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS.....

My first was born on her due date. you can ask your OB if they will strip your membranes. That will sometimes start labor but i dont know if they will do it early. I am expecting my second a boy in may. I am hoping that they will induce me at 38 weeks because we know this is going to be a big baby! good luck and congrats!

I went 4 days past my due date.
I know you are really excited and ready for her to come out but.......If you wait and do alot of walking and NOT get induced, it will be alot easier. My doctor told me he would NOT induce me until 41 weeks and 2 days and I ended up going in labor on my own. I wanted to be induced on a thursday and my doctor said he would do it but he really wanted me to wait. I ended up having my baby the day before I wanted to be induced.
