To me, lies can be classified as white lies. Example - - when you're visiting someone at the hospital who is terrified of death. The doctor tells you that the person is dieing. When you talk to that person, you tell him that he's going to be as good as new in a couple of weeks.
Notice, you gain nothing from the lie, but it makes someone else feel much better. White lie--- no personal gain, no harm done to anybody.
Worst kind - - the malicious lie - - when you put your blame on someone else. Example. A person does something terribly wrong. When confronted he denies guilt but says he say someone else do the wrong. The other person who is innocent is punished for the wrong he didn't do. Malicious lie, to escape punishment by lying to have someone else suffer your punishment.
Everything else between these two are ordinary lies, no matter how insignificant or how serious.

A white lie is a lie that is told to protect someone, or a lie that is not very important, or that you want to not be very important.

it means it's a small lie in the big scheme of things. like if someone gives me a gift and i say 'i love it', when i reality i don't, that's a white lie.

often they are used to protect other people's feelings, in my experience.

i think when most people say 'it was a white lie' they mean it was of little signifigance. for instance telling your parents you were at a party with 'steve' when you were actually with 'john' may be a white lie to many teenagers.

My friend buys an ugly orange dress, and she really likes it. She asks me if it looks good on her, I tell her a white lie, "Yes, it does look good on you!"
