L = 2S + 2
L + S = 26
L = 26 - S

26 - S = 2S + 2
24 = 3S
8 = S

The short piece is 8 units, the long piece is 18 units.

I presume the "Y=26" means that the uncut board is 26 feet long.

Let x be the length of the shorter piece.
Then the longer piece is length 2x+2
Both pieces together are 26 feet.

x + (2x + 2) = 26
3x+2 = 26
3x = 24
x = 8

The shorter piece is 8 feet long.
The longer piece is 18 feet long.

I'm assuming the Y=26 is the total length of the board...if I'm correct the 2 lengths would be 8 and 18

x is short, so (26 - x ) is long.

(26-x) - 2x = 2
3 x = 24
x = 8
and longer piece is 18
