You cant expect the ideas of democracy to happen over night in country that has never had any ideas of democracy.
How strange GWB wants to bring American democracy to Iraq while at the same time he seeking to undermine the workings of democracy in this country.

Giving the people of Iraq something they didn't care one way or the other about is not why we attacked Iraq. We attacked to gain control of the second largest pool of crude oil in the world which just happens to be under Iraq. It is all business. Certain people want to make as much as they can from this war and seem to be doing it quite well. If it does happen to result in some sort of democracy or freer government than they had under Saddam than all the better but that is not the main reason we are there.

no we haven't , iraqis are in a war right now with the radicals , although we have made many parts of iraq safe there are to many places where the radicals are killing the innocent citizens . They do not have freedom , if they don't practice the beliefs the radicals believe the islam religion should be they get killed , removing saddam was a big step in freedom , but the radicals who kill so they won't have freedom are still there .
And yes we do have the responsibility when it effects our way of life , the radicals goal is to conquer their own people that don't believe the same things they do then conquer the west , if we leave they will easily take over iraq , grow in large numbers and come after America .

Iraq is not ready for democracy, they have lived sheltered lives they don't have freedoms like americans, I don't see how a democracy will work in Iraq the people have no clue what that is. I know we want to help them by making life peaceful there but it's not gonna happen overnight this will take years. This is something there not used to this process will take time. Terrorism happening there won't make it easy and it's tough because the middle east is so religious and there are many cultures there. Stablizing Iraq will require stablizing the whole middle east.

It's not our place. Isn't now and has never been our job to decide things for the Iraqi people.
Yeah, Saddam is gone, but the violence between the 3 groups in Iraq isn't going to stop anytime soon.
When people are willing to blow themselves up in order to kill others, you know it's a very deep seeded problem.
Could you imagine if Cons had to kill themselves for their religion? They'd cease to exist.

Actually, our goal is to give them the freedom to live their lives as WE choose. WE think they should live in a democracy, and I bet within ten years, they'll elect another dictator. Saddam Hussein was ELECTED. People forget that.

I'm glad you didn't say oil. You raise the thorn in nation building. Can we impose what we feel is good sense into another nation through benign occupation. I refer you to Woodrow Wilson's unsuccessful seizure of Vera Cruz.
That said, the Iraqis have a chosen to have a stable government by democratic means. They have elected a government that wishes a stable and peaceful Iraq.
It is now only by this recognized government invitation that we remain. It is by the authority on a sovereign, democratically elected, independent nation that we are there today.
They have asked us to stay until they are able to stabilize there nation. So, our question should be, Democrat or Republican, should we do this and can it be done.

Yes it is their choice how they choose to live. Problem is not everyone has resorted that they wish to live in violence. In fact, just the opposite. They chose to live in a non-violent democracy. They demonstrated this by voting. More people turned out to vote for democracy, than those who have turned to violence. I think the will of the people including the peacful kurds in the north have chosen to do the right thing without us deciding for them. We are merely there to help them get to the point that they chose Pip.

Here is an analogy.
You kid is getting beat up on his way to school. You step in one day and stop the bully from beating up your kid.
Your kid says the next day that the bully beat him up again.
So, you walk with your kid to school to keep the bully from beating up your kid.
The bully throws rotten fruit at you from hiding places and even hits you in the head with a bottle causing a cut.
But you manage to keep your kid from being beat up over a period of a week.
Now, you do nothing about the bully because you can't identify him or locate him. He always blends in with the other kids walking to school and you don't know what to do but keep walking your kid to school.
After a while, you decide that you have done your job and its enough already and you stop walking your kid to school.
What do you think will happen since the bully is still there, unidentified and unstopped?
I think you kid gets the beating of his life and may even get hospitalized or killed because the bully is really POed that you were there at all but glad that now you are gone so he is going to make up for lost time and opportunities.
What is a better scenario?
I would get my kid in every martial arts class I could. Get him trained in boxing and judo. Teach him how to keep a bicycle chain rolled up in his pocket and teach him about staying within groups.
Then one day, my kid would be able to defend himself against the bully.
One day my kid would bring home news that the bully had tried to beat him up and that he and his friends beat the crap out of the bully.
Now the bully leaves your kid alone plus leaves a lot of other people alone.
That is what we are trying to do in Iraq. Teach the children how to take care of themselves against the bullies.
When that job is done AS DEMONSTRATED by evidence that Iraq is beating the crap out of the islamic fascist, THEN we can withdraw and find another block with another kid being beat up and do the same thing.
Get it?

Everyone seems to have a different perspective on the true goals. If the goal truly is what you have stated, then we probably have. They (Iraqis) will not see any institutions or government official endorsed by the U.S. as anything other than heretical.
