There is a pretty simple explanation for the rainfall in your area. First, texas is a large predominately flat area the is very large. as the area heats from the suns rays it causes what is known as a continental high pressure. No weather is associated with high pressures. second, the airstream from the gulf really doesn't effect you in Dallas because of the convection heat rising over a large land mass. Therefore, you don't enjoy the moisture of the air condesing and falling as rain. Finally, the winds that are in the upper atmosphere is directioned steadily across the continent, again bring little moisture to your area. However, when these change a little you get a surplus of rain which causes the flooding there. Thunderstorms are usually associated with local weather, so many of your storms are from moisture that is gathered from reletively local areas.
