(Throwout bearing) is between the clutch fork, and pressure plate.
As the engine turns the flywheel, the fly wheel turns the clutch disc, which is held to the flywheel by the pressure plate.
The throw out bearing presses against the pressure plate springs to release the clutch plate from the flywheel to enable smooth shifting between gears.
If you tend to rest your left foot on the clutch pedal while driving, the is ALWAYS a little pressure pushing on the throw out bearing, and they tend to wear out faster than normal.
To replace them, the transmission needs to be removed.
The clicking noise could be as simple as putting a little white grease at shift fork rod to the shift fork. If it does it only when tou push on the clutch engine running or not.
Have your buddy, push on the clutch while you're under the truck to locate the clicking noise.

It could be a dual problem. The f150 has had numerous problems with bearings in the rear end. It wouldn't affect your ability to shift gears, however. Another bearing that may be noisy is a wheel bearing. Your friend may have been right, in that an internal problem in the transmission could be the source of the noise, and therefore could be the problem with your shifter. Best case scenario is the wheel bearing, or otherwise be prepared to spend $1000 to $2500. I'd go to the dealer to see if there has been any silent recalls. HAVE IT ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY.

First thing I would do is check the transmission fluid. Then check the cluth reservoir and make sure it's full. The clicking sound could be the u-joints in your drive shaft.

i think you have problem with your transmission with synchronizer and or bearing. you must have some pattern if the problem with synchronizer... for example if 1st gear and second has problem, meaning the syncronizer ,. if only 1st gear, either borken tooth or bearing. you must bring you car to the mechanic for further advise. a good mechanic will knw what the problem immediately.
