It worked well and still is when one looks at Gandhi. Bin Laden will enjoy his antics for a limited time. Nero was Emperor for a relatively short time (just over a decade) before people had had enough and he knew it so he killed himself rather than have someone kill him.

Extrimism doesn't work--you are right there. But you need to be careful who you apply the label to. Gandhi was hardly an extremist. Don't equate noviolence with pacifism. They are entirely different.

The only bad thing about Pacifism is that not everybody believes in it.
if everybody did this would be a much better world.
But not everybody does, so Pacifism loses practicality.

It seems to be working for Bin Laden so far. Our underfunded War on Terror is working in his favor, creating a more volatile U.S. economy and that was his aim.
