I am needing to back up data (mainly from the quick books accounting software). What would be the best way to do it? An extrernal drive, dvds, flash drive?

Intelligent backup plans involve redundancy.

Choose as many ways as you can & especially with DVD make more than one copy & keep them in different places.

Blank DVDs (rewritables) are cheap ... there is no excuse for not keeping more than one.

I would suggest buying an inexpensive and compact external hard drive that hooks up to your USB 2.0. This way you will not only be able to backup Quick Books, but also all of your other important data on your PC. You could even backup your entire Windows installation on to this drive. With Quickbooks, i would backup your entire quickbooks directory so you do not loose your settings as well.

See the link below for my suggested product. This is perfect!!! You can store it on your bookshelf when you are not backing things up.

I would suggest an external hard drive as the easiest and most reliable way to back it up, however, DVDs and flash drives are easier to fit into a fireproof safe or whatever you store your backups. Flash drives are probably the most durable backup method since they are solid state.

first you need to determine how much is your data worth and how much you can afford to loose. external disk is a good solution because you can automate the backup but it is not cheap. cd/dvd is cheap but you need to do it manually every week or month and you may get lazy. also cds and dvds are not too reliable. tape is best for large amounts of data but in your case it will be an overkill. I personally use a second internal hard drive and have automatic backup setup for certain folders for every night.
