She could ask for water and offer to pay the price of a regular drink. If the restaurant still refuses the request, they should leave.

She should tell the waiter/waitress to charge for the price of diet coke and tell them to bring her water w/lemon. Or she could always bring her own drink.

If they won't serve her water, she should walk out.
If they serve alcohol, then they probably have club soda. Get a club soda with lime or lemon - same calories as water, but with fizz.

I always order 'iced tea' ... but when we go to some Thai restaurants, I actually have to TELL THEM how to make plain old iced tea ... brew it up and pour it over ice ... because they drink 'Thai iced tea' that has both cream and sweetener, and I don't like any cream or sweetener in my tea. I would HOPE that any 'restaurant' could make iced tea ... and if it is in an 'Asian' restaurant, your friend could get some 'really exotic' teas over ice ... I love 'green tea' and also the regular 'Chinese tea' over ice ...

They can't really refuse her water, although I suppose they can be jerks about the lemon. Maybe she can ask for seltzer, especially if these are places with bars.
