Small amounts of shredded newspaper can be added to conventional compost piles.

Bottom of bird cage, shredded use it to fill liter box, keep kids amused, hats, paper trees, paper mache, swords, crunch into balls and see how many you can toss into a basket, stacks can be used to make mazes, paper air planes, starting fires, wrapping presents, packing glass or other items, training dogs, disciplining dogs or cat or husbands (one whack on the nose lets them know you're serious).

Paper mache... cleaning windows (my method is the same as yours), drop cloth for painting, Science Olympics activities, Scavenger hunts to get kids dissecting and delineating text...

hmmm well I start my fires in the pit and burn barrel with them, put em on the floor for when the new puppy who might have an accident, my friend put them through a shredder for cat litter after her kittens where declawed, wrap dishes or glass when you move, lay on the floor when painting well I am out of ideas

line anything and everything. we have two mice,one dwarf hamster and one guinea pig cage that all get lined. use it to clean windows, use them to wrap soppy left overs and then dispose in a grocery bag. use themd them to make placemats....a neat art project, used them to put on the table when we eat crab legs, shredd it up for make shift litter when we run out. use it for insulation in the cat's carrier. i also use a layer on my coffee table, so i can paint my toe nails. we have used it under our painting projects. i have cut out portions of the newpaper and used it in my art work, in my collages, i have used it to protect the outside table while i spray paint......
