I would go with the tarantula. Far easier to maintain and probably cooler as far as little boys are concerned :)

yeah - fish require a lot of maintenance (on your part)....and are probably the most expensive (tank, heater, filter, gravel, etc). You'd have to establish the tank first (which takes 30 days) before you could add a lot of fish...
I think the gecko or tarantula would be a lot funner anyway. :)

Tarentula.
Way less maintenance, way lower cost. Your kid isn't going to change his fish tank water & balance the chemistry... its a pain in the butt if its not your personal tank.
Tarentulas require less space. Many can get away with a 4 gallon tank comfortably. Nearly all will be happy with a 10 gallon tank & a stick or two.
Gekos poop stinks & I think they require uv heat lighting.

if you want a Low-Maintenance Pet I preffer a tarantula
