Is it possible ? Perhaps ....
The true question would be whether it's a good investment to do so.

I don't think so.
Besides the CPU & RAM & hard drive there is the mainboard to consider.

A Celeron 1.2 based PC was most likely manufactured many years ago & lacks many new features (such as SATA,PCI-E & DDR2) that are now strong factors in faster performance.

Lacking SATA will force you to invest in older hard disk technology, as will lacking PCI-E for a better video card & lacking DDR2 slots for much faster RAM.

Of course the upgrade you mention will increase performance, however, I am CERTAIN that you will regret (within a few months) spending that money on an older unit.

If you were a friend of mine I would urge you to save that money towards a new PC that offers all those things & more.
Wait a while if necessary & you will be glad you did.

regards,
Philip T

First of all the 'basics.' How do we upgrade? As far as I know, it the motherboard, which forms the base, rather the chipset the motherboard supports. I would suggest a motherboard supporting PCI-Express.

For that, you have to CAREFULLY study the manual of the motherboard, if available; otherwise go to the relevant site and check what processor and graphic card it supports.

Then you can go in for an Intel or AMD processor, (or any other), that satisfies your needs. For that please go through comparison charts available on most sites.

As for RAM I would humbly suggest for a branded one, and 1GB (you might see 512 MB fall short of requirements). As for HDD please go in for at least 80 or 160 GB. They are very cheap now.

And please do not overlook other components. A graphic card of at least 64 MB, a DVD Writer, a branded Power Supply, a finely ventilated cabinet, and the thermal grease for application between the processor and the heat sink.

I do not know what monitor you have, but even that should be considered along with the keyboard and mice. I will suggest for wireless ones, so that the strain in the eyes (a PC is not a natural product, and like all inventions carries many hazards!) is taken care of. If you use the PC for talking to others or listening to songs in solitude, then a headphone has also to be considered.

All this, assuming you already have the Operating System of your choice.! All the best.

Raghu ,
If your looking for a Home PC than this Update is not sufficient and if for Work it is excellent .

You need to spend around 13,000 Rupees for these updates
Your Processor Intel Pentium 4 HT - 4500 Rupees
Motherboard - Intel (Original) 946 - 4600 Rupees
80 GB - HDD - 1200 Rs
512 MB RAM -2300 Rupees

* If you are going for a home PC add up a Graphics Card around 2500 Rs for simple use and not high end gaming . Nvidia Geforce 4000 MX 128 MB

It would be cheaper and more reliable to buy a new computer. After all you are buying the main components of a pc - processor, RAM, and hard drive. Might as well throw in a motherboard and case and you have a new computer! Also, what you are trying to upgrade to is old technology so you might look for a cheap used system with what you want if money is a problem.

You would probably be much better off just purchasing a new case/power supply - and putting a mobo with a new processor and ram on it.

You might be able to use some pieces from the old machine to finish it out.

Either that, or take a look at Dell computers - I have had pretty good luck with them, and they are cheaper than dammit.

Maybe. Verify that the manufacturer of the Motherboard supports a 3GHZ processor for your model board, Ram and an HD are pretty much plug and play so more than likely it will be fine.

Let me know if you need more details

3GHz is a major boost in processor from a 1.2GHz so you would see a drastic improvement, as would you see in an addition to RAM.

If you add a nice new video card to that list, then yes, you will see a very nice increase in performance. Not enough for something like Vista Ultimate on 1024 scale, but certainly to run current 3d games well.
