Talking in relative terms of time, yes Ponting is the best of the present day captains, but not certainly the best overall.

hmm...............ponting may be the best captain for his team...but the best in the world...i don't think so..the Australian team is not a well balanced team than the sri lankans.....and mahela's field placement is far better than the ausies......the fact is that the austrailians havent met a PERFECT ALLROUND SIDE as yet...a good match to look forward will be when the roo's meet the LIONS on the 16th April

If ponting has the likes of matty hayden and gilchrist to open and mcgrath, and also himself, i think he is the world best batsman at the mo, but not the best captain

Yes, apart from the fact that he is a model for the game and his own players - the simple fact is that he is allowed to be. The management up above are not stepping between him and the crease as is evident in some countries.
