You do have a coach right?
Well, for a swimmer the best technique you can adopt is to listen to your coach and do exactly as he/she suggests in relation to improving your stroke.
Another thing you can do is to look at what champions do... especially look at those underwater shots cause that is where all the action is, try and understand what they are doing, and then see if you can apply the same tricks to your stroke. A good one, for beginners is gliding.... it takes less energy to streamline and glide than it does to thrash your way through the pool... therefore it takes longer before you feel like you are carrying a piano.
Another is to stretch out (which is really just more streamlining). To go faster, whatever the stroke, you are trying to make water go past your body as fast as possible with the least possible displacement of it....

i am a competitive swimmer for 6 years and i am 14 i am on the jv team at my school and my 100 meter free time is 1:11 that means 4 lengths of a 50 meter pool. the tequiques i have learned from my coash is the following:
bilatoral breathing
3 butterflys kicks off the turn
DO NOT BREATH before 3 strokes after the turn
kick hard but pace yourself
slightly bend your arms when doing crawl
to build your endurance use a poolbuoy and a kick board and do maybe a 400 meter as a warmup and then do a 400 kick athen 400 swim
hope you learn from this info and just keep swimming!

swim fast and hard during practice. keeping your heart rate up while keeping stroke count is important. this way, in a race, you can work hard, but get less tired because you are used to swimming fast.
ive been swiming for 7 years, and jv for 7th grade, and 8th grade on im on varsity. sectionals since 8th. im a distance swimmer wiht a 5:44- 500free

if you do stroke drills you learn to swim better and also if you are practicing daily and if you build up your musclesyou use to swim that should help you swim faster...

High elbow catch under water, strong body position in the water, proper timing in your stroke...and your head should be in a neutral position, not "down"

Good technique.
BTW, keeping your head down will actually slow you down.
