My son wants to get a BB gun but im not sure if i should get him one he's 13 but im worried of what he will use it for. It would improve his hand eye coordination but he might try and threaten people with it?

What Should I Do?

Hi, I know exactly what your going through as I had the same dilema. My son was 13 when he wanted one, I was dead against it because I thought my son would be using it like a toy gun. My husband assured me that it would only be used when another adult was with him. So I relented and I have to say that I dont know what I was worrying about, my son was never left alone while he had it and the only place he was allowed to use it was in the back garden. The gun was put away when it wasnt being used so he wasnt tempted to show his mates and show off with it. Hes fifteen now and has a air rifle which he still uses in the back garden just for target practice, hes still watched because boys can get silly but I have to say hes become very responsible with it. I would say let him but have some strict rules. Good luck!

Has your son been violent or used aggression against others? If not, then you and the boy's father should be prepared to make sure he is schooled in the proper use of it. Many cities and towns do have laws on discharging even BB guns within the town limits so make sure you check on that. I would further suggest a National Rifle Association hunter safety course. This will be a good time for Dad and son to do this together. Many Police departments sponsor similar types of programs.

I know times have changed since I was a lad, but I was hunting game with a shotgun (on fairly rare occasions) when I was 9 years old. Hunted regularly on my own or with friends from age 14 on. Education on safe handling practices is the only way to go. Some other replies to this question are good also. Mainly knowing your own son is where to start.

This all depends if he wants a BB gun Or an air soft gun. Now depending on where you live there are age restrictions. A normal BB gun probably not but air soft, shop around and learn about it yourself .I would recomend 1 or 2 spring powered pistols at about 200 feet per second. But make sure you teach him how to be responsible with it (don't take it to school, don't shoot the neighbor cat ect...) Air soft is a fun sport just approach it with safety in mind and don't forget to check you local laws.

Airsoft for now, then you can get him a bb gun at 16 cause 13 he will shoot animals or even people if he is a bad child then dont get him nothing. NONE OF THESE NO GUNS, unless he wants a cap gun, which annoys neighbors so anyway screw guns if he is bad and failing classes

Let him buy an airsoft gun under a set of conditions. ie he be responsible with it, no shooting animals/mates etc and that it doesn't leave the house without appropriate supervision.

If he proves that he's responsible enough, then let him have a BB/airgun.

Make sure he knows that if he breaks the rules, even once, that it's the end of the line and that there will be NO more guns.

the other night a 16 year old pulled a bb gun on my car as i was driving out of our road, i crapped it, it was dark and if anyone had been about to cross i would have killed them. There is no way of knowing they are "toy" guns, there should be an age limit on buying them, they have the ability to kill a cat so what could that damage do to anothers face / eye?

Airsoft gun. Same thing but fires plastic pellets. (And way less powerful.) If he threatens anyone with that then he should never have a BB gun.

In today's climate, there is no way I would allow my child to own, or even borrow a gun of any kind. The risk of being shot by the police, or even another kid, etc, is all too real now.. :(
