Do you just go up to offer a kind word of encouragement or gratitude and shake their hand?

As an ex-Naval Officer, I volunteer for the USO and certainly do so. I am also a member of the VFW, and have gone for the last 8 years to the Golden Gate National Cemetary to plant flags on Memorial Day. If I see a service member on the street: they get a nod, a smile, and a kind word (though there aren't many around here in the SF Bay Area).

I go to the local Navy & Marine Recruiters office... donate model aircraft and ships for display (I'm a professional model builder)... and talk with the kids.

And if ANY service member arrives at my local pub, they get a free drink.

WHY ?? Because other fine citizens treated ME very kindly when I was in Uniform: A Texas highway patrolman told a tow-company that the STATE would pay my tow when I broke down outside Amarillo. The Texas Hotel who comped my night in that hotel while waiting for my car to be repaired... the Steak House staff who comped my MEAL !!

Damned Proud to have served, and proud of my Shipmates... no matter their branch of service.

I have. Five Marines were coming off a flight in Houston. As they deplaned, people stopped, stared, and then came a roar of appause and that roar just grew louder and louder and the crowd intensified. Security came running from every direction, but then they joined in too. The Marines were stunned. They clearly didn't expect that. I was one of many who got close enough to at least give a " thumbs up".

Sometimes. I know I have a brother who didn't have a choice, it was either navy or prison. So why thank him. But yes I do thank marines and army men/women who have just come back.
