Next month the school were my 6 year old daughter attends is planning to remove asbestos. I think it's great that they are going to remove it but I'm concerned because they plan to start a couple of months before our children are out of school. My sister has trained and removed asbestos herself and is horrified that they are even considering it. She said there is no way they can guarantee that our children will not be affected. Also, the school is very small. There is one bathroom for each sex and every room is occupied. They only have one water fountain (if that tells you how small it is...) Other parents and myself are trying to figure out where they plan to remove asbestos. We're very concerned. What would you do?

I spoke with the Principle of her school. The Super is not in today. Imagine that... the letter went home yesterday informing us of the asbestos removal. The Principle let me know that he is in the dark and that he'll be more informed at a later date. The construction is supposed to begin April 16th. I highly doubt he's being left in the dark. Thanks for all of your answers.

I would talk to the school board and let them know that they can send my child's school work home every day because there is no way I would send my daughter into a place that they are removing asbestos!! There are people in special masks and outerwear that remove this because it is dangerous! I am sure they are not going to provide all of the children with breathing masks and a special suit to wear when they go to school so if you dont' want to deal with cancer in the future you need to protect your child and everyother Child that have parents not smart enough to protect their own children. If they won't send home the homework, you could homeschool them, there are a lot of good programs out there and one of them is Abeka Academy. Don't jepordize your child's life. Protect it.

I would first consider where I received my information. If another parent told me that the plan was to remove asbestos while school was in session, I would talk to the principal first to verify the facts. If the principal was not able to answer all my questions than I would contact the superintendent of our school system. Unless an official letter came home with this information, I am inclined to believe that there has been some mis-communication. Asbestos removal laws are quite strict and the removal must be done by trained personnel. The laws that I am familiar with provide for only a few scenarios when it is permissible for asbestos removal in an occupied building. If it were me, I'd get all the facts before making a rash decision. This has the potential for lawsuits and all school districts want to avoid that whenever possible.

Go to the school ask questions - Lots of them - I know when the asbestos was removed my the school my children attended they gave the students time off & early dismissal, but it was a quick job about 2 weeks. Does the school plan to still teach during the removal? What room (s) will be efected? Lastly you could keep your child at home until the work is done, as for the school work (if any) and do homebound. Asbestos is not to be played with, my father is suffering from the exposure of it now. Hope this helps you out some!

contact your board of education ask them if they could get the removal postponed then contact your local health department and express your concerns they will either calm your fears or they may be able to stop the procedure until the children are on summer vacation. You have every right to try to protect your children if enough parents complain they might just postpone it themselves.

Yeah... this is absurd. There is no way they could remove asbestos with the children in the building. Even being on site is an OSHA violation. I suggest you call OSHA yourself.

First of all, you need to find out all of the details! If this is really what they plan to do, I wouldn't allow my child to attend school! If you get enough parents to go along with you, which should be easy, they may be forced to wait until school gets out! Even a slight risk is too big when it come to your kids! Protect them!!

I highly doubt that the school will be open during the removal. I'm sure they plan to have the kids go elsewhere temporarily.

I would call the school board and voice my opposition to this move and promise that if they go forward you will go to the media and make it a public issue because it endangers your child and others and it's not sensible.
