chola: I read The Stand back in the 80's the first time. It was the unedited version and it, to me is the ONLY version. Thanks for the answer!! :)

I loved 'The Shining' but 'The Stand' is a masterpiece! You can tell a lot research went into King's 'The Stand' and it's scary that a "superflu" could actually happen! That book has always stayed with me!

Read The Stand first. It's a must. The Shining is good too. I mean, I'm sure you knew that because you asked the question, but go with the first one and then I would follow that with Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Unbelievable. I've "heard" or rather, I read yesterday that it is one of the finalist for the Pulitzer this year. Same framework as The Stand. Different story. I hope this helps.

The Stand is my all time favourite Stephen King book, closely followed by the shining, hated the stand movie though and loved the shining, heres johnny!

The Stand - it is the epic of all epics - get the author's version it is over 1100 pages - includes all the stuff they cut to trim the book down to 700 pages for the first release
