Hey everyone, I've been to the Doctors today and he's told me that I'm suffering from severe depression... he put me on anti-depressants... so why is it that today I've been in the weirdest moods ever? One minute I'm laughing and joking, and then I feel like tellin' everyone to leave me alone...

I'm not a drug user, I never have been and never will.
I started to see a counsellor and she passed me onto the Doctor to get a medical opinion. And after speaking to him, he told me that I had severe depression and that he would give me tablets... I am not niaive and I know that it takes a couple of weeks to kick in... but why is it that today, no one can speak to me cos I look like I'm almost ready to break? I've never been like this before!
The only time that people think I'm down is when I don't talk cos I never shut up... so how can a Doctor diagnose this in about 5 minutes? I mean, would I seem like I'm depressed? I just don't get it!

My Doctor has given me leaflets and that saying what my side-effects are gonna be, and how I can try to get around them.
My moods this weekend have been up and down like a yo-yo!! One of you said you are a psychiatrist and that you don't think I'm depressed... could you explain that one? I'm a looper!!
Oh, and I had some really good advice from one of you askin' if there was a possibility that I'm Bi-Polar, and it's weird but my boyfriend said that a few times last night when we were talkin' about things (total godsend). But I suppose there's always a possibility, isn't there? I'll speak to my Doctor about it.
I think the tablets, (fluoxetine) are makin' me really paranoid and easily annoyed! My fella hadn't text or called yesterday and I told him it was over because of that... thankfully he knew not to listen to me, but what if I drive him away with my moods?

Laughing can be very near to crying....it's an emotional outburst. This would also fit in with the fact that you have just been diagnosed...a lot of emotioon comes from that too like relief, anger etc.

Good Morning Emma,
it's ok. Relax Hon, it will get a little easier once the meds. take effect. Everybody reacts differently, but in general, it takes at least two weeks before medication will "kick in". Don't give up and please, don't hide from the world. Especially, when you feel like that's what you want to do. Try to confide in someone who cares about you. It can be a partner, a parent, a relative, a friend, even a chatroom (but I'd be really careful in there cause people tend to take advantage of someone's mood) or sometimes just an acquaintance (like you did when you came in here). Now the reason why you feel especially bad today, is because now you have a medical opinion to your "moodiness" and sometimes it's a bit hard to swollow to be told that you suffer from depression, never mind severe depression. It's just overwhelming. Part of it is relief cause I am sure you'd already started thinking you were simply "crazy". Well Hon, you are not. Millions suffer from depression. If left untreated, it can end in caos, so you already did the right thing by seing a professional. Keep as busy as possible. Downtime is when depression becomes even more prevalent. If you are into sports, do that after work, or whenever you can. Physical exhaustion will help you sleep better. Swimming is always great. Plus you might meet some nice people there. Especially, if the pool has a hot tub and you alternate between swimming and relaxing in there. Good luck Sweetie and you are on the right track. Just don't lose hope and give the meds a chance to correct your chemical balance. MsB.

Please do not get upset by this, but have you ever talked to your doctor about the possibility of having bi-polar disease. I noticed that nobody had mentioned this and it is fairly common and is often diagnosed as simple depression rather then what it really is. In that case the medication that you are on will not help with the bi-polar. We often wondered if my grandmother suffered from bi-polar because she was on anti-depressants but she would still have terrible mood swings, Happy one minute and the next she would either be crying or shouting at us in a rage. Classic symptoms of this disease are irrational mood swings. This might not be the case at all for you but i wanted to give you another option to consider. I hope that you meds start to work for you soon. Good luck and have a wonderful day=)

A number of people have this type of reaction when they begin taking antidepressants.

It usually will take your body 4-6 weeks to become accustomed to the antidepressants in your body, at which point your physician may raise your dosage or keep it where it is at. A good resource is the pamphlet that should have been included with your medication - it will list the side effects and give you an idea of how many people had those side effects.

I know that the side effects are annoying, but if they become debilitating, call your physician and tell him/her the problem. A different medication may be better suited for you.

It takes about a week to get it into your system, and about a month to actually start doing it's full potential job. Your body will go thru changes and like diarehha and jitters and other things before it adjusts and then it will all level out. If it doesnt then you need to go back to your doctor. Take it daily and dont miis. Do not stop taking suddenlly. And the docs dont always tell you everything about the meds..so I suggest to Google it and read up aon all the medications NOT to take while on them. As in, I took regular aspirin with my dosage and it nearly killed me..you have to wait a few hours before taking stuff like that. Educate yourself on your meds..or you will end up lke Anna Nicole.

that's just the nature of depression. one minute things are fine and you want to joke around...the next minute you feel like crying and want to be left alone.

depression is actually a mis-firing of certain signals/chemicals in your brain. these chemicals regulate your mood. so if they fire sometimes, you're cool and if they misfire for a while, you start to feel bad.

the meds should help you get that evened out.

Its the medication. Ive been through a depression b4, and its hard to get through. Meds won't help ease pain and heartache. The best method is to find and search within yourself, talk to someone with age and wisdom, only then will your depression end. It will be hard, but getting it together on your own will make you a stronger person.

Sounds like mood swings...
Ok, but NOT the end of the world.
No Way. There are a million things you could do. Your doctor would know..
I would either take rest or put myself in a project where i have hardly time to get depressed!
