American Music?

Question

What band do you think personifies AMERICAN music.Not a category of music (blues,country,jazz etc..) But song writing,style,overall American Music.I personally think BOB DYLAN and THE BAND top the list.They really can't be put into a class of "ROCK,BLUES,COUNTRY,JAZZ"If you listen to their MUSIC (The Basement Tapes) is a great example.It's pure,raw,music at it's core. What do you think????? I'd love to hear your suggestions and comments.

I chose the Basement Tapes because it was done on an old Reel to Reel Recorder, Three Microphones,Mixed and Mastered in a Basement at Old Pinks House.The sound and sheer JOY and Dedication to MUSIC really comes out with just Basic equipment and Sheer Talent .

The Band is probably one of the most overlooked (by the average music listener) groups of the rock era. They only had a few Top 40 hits and I don't remember their songs being played on the radio a whole lot (I'm a "baby boomer" so I was listening to the radio back in the late 60's and early 70's)

Listening to their songs makes me think: "If there had been rock and roll back in the 19th century pioneer days, the Band would have been its #1 group." Songs like "Up On Cripple Creek"and "The Weight" sound like they're from an earlier time and place.

Have you ever seen "The Last Waltz" which is a film about the Band's last concert? It not only shows them performing with other artists and groups, but includes interviews with the members of the Band. Unfortunately several of the members are now deceased.
