Even if the Brits were inside their territorial waters, why would they take them prisoners with all the tension that now exist.
If Iran had wanted to, they could have just escorted the British ship out of their waters and made a big deal out of that affair.
Taking these British sailors as prisoners seems like an intentional act to create more tension.

If a group of Iranian soldiers crossed into our waters, we'd arrest them too.

Given the technology available today with satellites and gps, if the UK states the vessel was 1.7 miles in Iraqi waters, it is verifiable fact.

Given that, this is a provocation by a terrorist state to escalate the odds of military action.

The only reason I can think of for doing so is fear of revolution. Iranians are not at all happy with their current government, they like americans, like capitalism and want freedoms. There is daily growing tensions in the citizenry and the government believes if it can get someone to attack them the unrest will go away. This is probably true since the Iranians want to deal with their own problems and do not want interference from UK or USA.

The fear is that no matter what they are on the verge of being attacked so why not hold a few human shields .
This is all they are and will be shown off to the world as victims of any attack launched into Iran .
They will announce that that was their secret hiding place no matter what gets bombed .
Hey! --I would try the same thing .

You're correct and clear in your additional information in my opinion.

I think IRAN as a government is NUTS... sadly, the PEOPLE of Iran who are for the most, WONDERFUL, INTELLIGENT, and KIND people are being SCREWED by their government's actions.

Sadly, after the Ayatollahs came to power in the 70's, the people haven't been able to find a middle-line government between the Shah and the Ayatollahs'

PERHAPS, the Iranian Governments Actions will provide some incentive to the people to CHANGE their government !
