During the whole year it is a good time to go to Madeira. Only during the first months of the year I have experienced some periods with showers, wind and rain. I assume you are looking for beaches. Madeira does not have a beach scene. Natural sandy beaches you will not find here easy. Most of the natural beaches are rocky. There are however a few new man-made beaches, such as Calheta Beach, and sea pool complexes in Porto Moniz and in Funchal. BUT ... when you are on Madeira you can visit its little sister-island Porto Santo which has 8km beautiful golden sand beach. You can visit Porto Santo by taking the ferry that sails frequently between the two islands.
For nightlife the best place is the city of Funchal. There are a great deal of activity going on that tourists and people from outside the island does not know of ... because it is locally advertised (thus in Portuguese) however everybody is welcome to participate. My advice is ... to ask! When you are in Funchal ... ask any Madeiran (at the restaurant, hotel, taxi driver, personnel at the shop etc.) where and when is the next nightlife activity. The trick is to ask where they would go themselves when going out. You will be surprised the options that are here.

When we were in Madeira, we kept hearing that the most beautiful and fun time to be there is at New Years. I'm sure the weather would be fine, but it might not be quite warm enough for swimming.

Madeira has one beach, but it is private and absolutely no one can visit. Consider Sao Miguel, the largest island of the Azores. Very rich in culture, awesome nightlife throughout the island and tons of activities. Also, a few great beaches and two water parks. Good day trips available. Best places to stay are the capital, Ponta Delgada and Nordeste.
In Madeira, not much nightlife or activities other than look at the lush greenary and dining out.

I've never been there but I think it is pretty nice almost all year round. Also, from my understanding Madeira does not have any beaches. However, it is absolutely beautiful with tons activities. The place to be is probably Funchal. I'm thinking of going there myself this summer.

I have been going to Madeira twice a year for the past eight years now. We always stay in Funchal hotels, either the Monumental Lido that is on the Estrada Monumental in the Lido area or the Hotel Porto Santa Maria on the sea front in the Zona Velha (old town) Madeira is not cheap, has no beaches but is a most beautiful island and we have made many friends who help me in my efforts to learn Portuguese, which is easier to read than to speak(for a Brit, that is)

Hwy not go to Lisbon instead? Madeira is a really nice place to visit, I mean Cristiano Ronaldo lives there. But try Lisbon & Porto, very beautiful round June period all the way till September. Plus it's not that expensive at summer to fly.
Beach wise there's Cascais & Estoril. Very nice beaches, plus they have quite a few clubs along the shore. But I advise you to visit Cristo Rei & the lift in Lisbon. It's really nice & at night you can see the Lisbon bridge light up, really beautiful.

Lisbon is Europe's second-oldest capital and when house to the world's greatest explorers like Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, becoming the very first correct world town, the capital of an empire distributing total continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India) and know you can invest several time to learn that historic town, with hotelbye is where you ought to start. Probably the most acknowledged of Lisbon's significant attractions is the St. George's Castle. That castle instructions a fantastic place near Alfama on the top of a mountain overlooking the Portuguese capital. That is certainly one of Lisbon's most widely used tourist destinations. Its remarkable battlements, participating museum, and fascinating archaeological site mix to make the fort a gratifying experience for everyone, and kids especially will love clambering within the stable walls and systems that encircle the grounds.

Never been there, but I suspect Funchal is the best place to stay - most will be happening there.
Considered going there for honeymoon years ago 'cos the weather is pretty good through to September/October, but Summer months of June/July/August are probably the warmest.
