Secrets turn into lies, lies turn into stress.....

In my opinion, keeping secrets can play a large role in developing stress. Not only does the secret keeper need to keep them straight so as not to reveal them, but in the case of keeping a secret from loved one, the secret builds a tiny "wall" between the secret keeper and the other. This can create stress all on it's own. Further, the weight of keeping the secret isolates the keeper and isolation creates added stress.

I think that it depends on what the secret it. If you are keeping a secret about something bad happening to you, such as rape, incest, and abuse~ that can be very tough to deal with on your own. People who keep these type things to themselves tend to feel like it is their fault and there is no way out. They might also feel like no one really cares about them, being as no one has figured it out or said anything to them about it. If someone does say something to them about the abuse, the abusee might say it is not true, or that they have the situation under control..in these situations, keeping secrets would DEFINITELY cause stress...

If you are keeping a secret such as a surprise birthday party you are throwing for someone..i would think that the actual planning of the party would be more stressful than the actual secret keeping. If the person found out, that might cause you some stress, but I seriously doubt on the same caliber as the situations i mentioned earlier.

The key is, if something is bothering you, and you feel that you can talk to someone about it, you definitely should..

I think keeping secrets, especially about oneself, can bring on a lot of stress. The stress over what if someone finds out or what you'd do if it came out. Secrets can tear you apart if you don't find a way to deal with them.

It plays a big role. A problem shared is a problem halved. you don't even have to confide in friends, you can talk to a counsellor or a stranger who is willing to listen.
