Before you can answer this question, you have to define the words "religion" and "cult". You can't just say that a cult is a bunch of people with "weird" beliefs... after all, who gets to decide what is "weird"?

The most sensible definition I've heard is that a "cult" is a faith that gains most of its converts as adults, while a "religion" is a faith that most of its followers are born into. Christians were an upstart cult in the first century or two after christ, and faiths like buddhism can be a cult in America while they're a religion in much of Asia.

Obviously, if you define "religion" and "cult" in that manner, then religions aren't cults. If you choose to define them differently, then perhaps they are. In terms of beliefs, I don't see a big difference between the two: as noted, christianity used to be a cult way back when, but is now a religion, even though it's the same faith.

Actually, christianity has changed quite a bit since the early christians, but let's not quibble over details. :-)

Religions are popularly accepted cults, yes.
It's only called mythology when it's a discarded religion. (Greek mythology used to be Greek religion)
It's only called cults when it's not mainstream.

Many cults both popular AND non-mainstream can be dangerous.

The answer is not most but ALL. Some may be not as hazardous as others though & as long as they don't cause anybody harm they're OK. Human beings in general will always use religion as a security blanket from the obvious hell called life.

I understand why they continue to exist & sometimes they help people and can bring about good. Only until mankind has better control & knowledge of his world will he begin to leave religion. As a whole humanity is not ready yet. It serves a purpose and gives peace of mind from the inequities and injustices that are an everyday part of living in this universe.

You may want to look in a dictionary and look up the word "cult". And the answer is no. But there can be cults within many reliigions. Jim Jones is a major example...

To me a cult is the same as a religion but a cult has less followers and isn't as accepted by people.

I follow neither and never will!!!!

The fact there are multiple religions in existence, splitting millions from one another into groups with opposing views tells you all you need to know about religion. Belief unites.
