If you are thinking about putting it in your yard, STOP right now. It is extrememly invasive and will quickly take over your whole yard. You can almost see the stuff grow overnight. You have to cut it back nearly every day in the warmer months.

It really does depend on the species, your area of the world , and how well you care it.
There are two types of bamboo, runners and clumpers (simplfied terms).
Most clumpers grow slowly outward in a ring shape and are easilly maintained. However, a large majority of the clumpers are tropical in nature and will not survive temps below 30's. There are a few exceptions but not many.
As for the runners, yes these can be invasive IF the proper precautions are not used when first planting. Obviously containment is the first objective and there is plenty of "bamboo barrier" that can be purchased that will contain the bamboo where you want it. But yes it is true that if it "escapes" it can spread very rapidly once the grove is mature.
As for how fast it grows, bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on the Earth, with a mature grove having culms reach maximum height in a single growing season. Some of these are in excess of 80 feet. Most have stated that a bamboo grove will reach maturity in 10 to 20 years.
You can also keep it potted, but this will require yearly replanting to keep the pot from becoming pot bound.
I have many bamboos that have went from small 2 foot plants to having 16 foot culms in less than 3 years!

The number I get from my bamboo supplier is six years. This means, that six years after harvesting, it will have regrown to its former size and can be re-harvested every six years, with no reduction in yield.
