Yes, because he was supposed to bring balance to the Force. Killing the Sith would only keep it unbalanced. At the end of the movie the remaining Jedi ( that any one knows about) were Obi-one and Yoda. the Sith were Sidios and Vader. Balance was brought to the force. The Jedi were foolish and didn't realize that to balance the Force the Jedi and Sith numbers would have to be even 2 and 2.

There were 100's of Jedi, 2 sith. No balance there. In the end, there was only Luke.

But the real chosen one was R2-D2, the whole series centered around it.

yeah. it you watch the extras on the third episode, George Lucas talks about how some people think that Ani wasn't the chosen one, but that he actually was (and he ought to know since he wrote the screenplay and directed the movies). his argument was that eventually ani did restore balance to the universe by ultimately (finally, in my opinion) destroying the emperor. kudos for Vader.

Yes, think about it. He was the "one" to bring balance to the force and he did. They misinterpreted what that meant. They thought that meant to their advantage, in reality it meant bringing it down to two on the dark side and two on the light.

He was. Balance means harmony so when he reverted back to the good side and killed the emporer he restored balance.

If George Lucas says that's what he intended, then that's it.
