your heart...many patients can be brain dead yet still be alive if the heart keeps beating...

Of course there are machines used during open heart surgery that can perform the fucntions of the heart.

but without that, I'd say for the body to work the heart is more important

they are of equal importance...
let me tell you a short story. the brain tells everyone that he should be the big boss as he does all the thinking. No, said the heart because I am in the center of everyone, so I should be the big boss. The lungs, and the rest also did the same thing except for the anus who just kept silent about this big boss issue. From then on, everyone kept bullying the anus and they they said the anus does not do anyhing so important.

This made the anus feel so bad so he stopped functioning. For a few days, no one noticed this until the intestine began to complain of you know what. A few days again after, the liver and the kidneys felt sick. then the hands and the feet fell so numb the cannot do a thing. then the heart slowed down and the brain wanted to burst as he can no longer tolerate the mess.

Now, who do you think is the boss?

For me that answers is more philosophical than anything. Since I believe that we have spirits in our bodies that communicate and experience life through the brain, the brain is more important to me. I think of brain-dead people on life support as truly dead, meaning their existence depends on their individuality and not really their biological functions. So yeah, the heart is a part of a larger system that puts us in the same class as a gerbil or walrus. But our brains make us human, separating us from those animals (and from each other) by giving us personalities and complex relationships.

People can survive with an artificial heart, but there is no such thing as an artificial brain.

Your brain is the most complex system biological system in the universe. It has more synaptic connections than stars in our galaxy and each cell is estimated to make ~1000 synaptic connections. As such, it's complexity will likely never be equaled by any computer or man-made system.

Your brain does way more than conscious thought.

But your heart, all it really does is pump, and we can replicate that.

Both are vital organs, they are both dependent on one another. The brain controls the beating of the heart, and the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the brain. Therefore the answer is that they're both equally important.

Your brain. It controls everything. It tells your body when to move, heart to beat. I could tell you everything your brain does but it would take a month to list it all. To put it bluntly if you are brain dead then even if you are on a maching to make you breath you are still dead. In other words without your brain your heart will not work.

Well since you need both to live they are both about the same. BUT your brain (or a part of your brain) is what makes your heart pump. Without it your heart would stop. But then again without your heart the brain would die from lack of O2.

Co-dependent is the term I think. :)

obviously its the brain, it goes without saying actually, as heart is mere a muscle tissue which can be replaced using a plastic one which shall maintain its function of pumping, while brain is a centre that cant be replaced or created artificially, furthermore, its the brain that controls the autonomic functions of the heart and therefore if there is no brain there is no human being.

Whats the use of a brain without heart or vise versa? Both are important.

i'd say heart because that's what keeps us alive. the brain would not be able to function without the heart's help of pumping blood into it. i don't think it's possible for the brain or any organs to function without a heart......
