Willie Mays make "The Catch". 1955, Brooklyn Dodgers win their only World Series against the Yankees. Later the Dodgers would move to LA (1957). 1956, Don Larson pitches a perfect game in the World Series (Oct. 8) Mickey Mantle wins Triple Crown in the American League. 1957 Hank Aaron and the Braves win the World Series.
I'm sure there is a bunch of other things but it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet.

Roger Kahn wrote a book about this period, "The Era: 1947-1957, When the Yankees, the Giants, and the Dodgers Ruled the World "

You had the desegregation of baseball, a number of fantastic seasons, with two playoffs (AL in 1948, NL in 1951), and at the end of that period the movement of the Braves to Milwaukee, the Giants to San Francisco, and the Dodgers to Los Angeles.

The Queen was enthroned-not so memorable. Hillary climbed Everest. Dull but true.
Manchester City's goal keeper Bert Trautman, broke his neck during the Cup Final in '56 but carried on to the end of the game. City won. Mmemorable as City have not won much since the fifties!

In baseball?

Off of the top of my head, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, most of the Negro Leagues and teams folded, the women's baseball league folded, the Braves, Giants, Dodgers, and the atletics moved west, the GIants won their first pennant with the shot heard round the world, Mantle won the triple crown.
