I am 22 and attend University. I am not religious. Most of my friends are liberal or left leaning. In political arguments, I seem to be the one who is always defending George Bush or John Howard (Australia's conservative PM). I am not racist but I think it is time that some minority groups got over colonialism, slavery whatever. I don't want to see the Japanese hunt whales, but I still eat meat. I don't think corporations are evil. I think the war on terrorism is totally justified, perhaps not being conducted as well as it should. I want longer sentences for violent offenders. I want a strong economy. I vote conservative. Surprisingly I have many good friends who are lefties, we just have long arguments. One of them told me that peoples' political views change as they age. Does this mean that I will be a Vegan Communist at 50?

No, it's not wrong! There's no reason to alter your sincere beliefs just to fit in.

Don't worry about whether or not you change in the future. If your opinions "evolve" in another direction, or if they don't, all that matters is that you are honest with yourself.

Keep living and learning, and stay informed. Society needs people who are interested and educated, of ALL political views. Good luck.

PS I sometimes find it easier to avoid political discussions at work, and with family and friends, if I know people will disagree. But to each his or her own.

To me, you don't really sound like a conservative. You sound like someone who thinks independently --- there is a difference. I consider myself to be liberal leaning, yet I agree with some of your viewpoints (OK, not about Bush -- but I do like a good steak!)

I would be surprised to hear that you are actually arguing with your friends, more you are engaging in civil debate -- at least I hope so!

Let's say I've started out conservative, learned to loosen up a bit and look a the world a little differently, but have almost made it to 50 and I'm neither a communist nor a vegan!

Just keep an open mind and you'll do fine!

No, not wrong at all. Actually, even though you are in the minority in your way of thinking among your friends, they no doubt have a lot of respect for you because you think for yourself and don't just go along with popular opinion. That is the easy way. It can be true that your political views can change over your lifetime, influenced by what you have witnessed over the years. You will probably see your more left leaning friends take on a more conservative viewpoint as the years go by. Seems that many people have more liberal views when they are young, but that usually changes as they mature.

Young Lady. You should never let anyone talk you into believing anything more than what you do. I'm challenging everyone to bring the questioning and answering back to being civil and respectful. It's gonna be a tough road? But I'm asking for some help from anyone that can. This routine of false-accusations, deep hatred, and such a high grade of disrespect? Has gotten too far into being stupid. And I speak for Both Parties. Stay firm in your commitment to your chosen beliefs. But also be civil in how you approach ones that oppose those beliefs. Maybe we can turn this thing around.

You go girl! I was you 22 years ago when I voted for Reagan!

Your views may change or become stronger over time. As you go through life, you will be surrounded by people with opposing views. Be polite and debate intelligently. This will set a example for that which you represent. I am confident that you won't be a Vegan Commie at 50; you will be here, setting a good example for other young people. Good luck to you!

It's encouraging that you think for yourself. So many in an effort to get along with the crowd will naturally will accept their beliefs.

College is an environment that will test your conservative beliefs especially with liberal professors. Some times you will feel like you are the only one.

Have heart because once college is over the grads hit the real world, starting to earning a living. The metamorphose occurs the liberals will emerge from the caterpillar stage into beautiful conservative butterflies.

No I don't think you will. I think maybe you have matured at a much earlier age than most of us. Not to mention the fact that being liberal and a democrat has changed vastly over the last few decades.

JFK was the last great Democrat.

You are the free and the brave. Do listen to your 'friends' who may tell you otherwise. You can obviously think for yourself so you will learn more as you age. Stay positive and open minded. You sound like a wonderful young person.
