Speed reading is useful, but you take a hit on comprehension. What was that question again?

Absolutely! I have always done extremely well in intelligence tests and have a rather high IQ, but I had always had difficulty reading until I took a speed reading course in high school. I never had the patience to try to absorb the information presented in print. (I suspect that I have a slight case of dyslexia.)

Upon taking the speed reading course, I was able to read approximately 700 words per minute. That was 32 years ago. Now, I read about 3000 words per minute with better comprehension than when I try to read word by word.

I cannot read very technical information quite so quickly, nor can I absorb unusual writing styles (e.g. slang) as quickly.

However, applied properly, speed reading allows a person to concentrate (I have always had trouble concentrating!) and focus on the printed information. I would not have been able to get as far as I did in school without having taken my speed reading course in high school.

Speed reading is simply skimming over the passages and picking out key words that may be of interest. It is useful when having to read lengthy material that contains an excess of words! To absorb information, speed reading is probably not sufficient as not every word can possibly taken in if someone's reading through 'thousands' of words a minute!

Some people really do have photographic memories.

Even people with 'average' cognition can process huge amounts of information in minutes. You can train yourself to glance through the pages of a book, and absorb relevant material quickly. Not very enjoyable, but a useful technique at university.

Speed reading is skimming. They don't read every word. Just key sentences so you kind of get what is being said. Only useful if you are forced to read alot of stuff that is verbose, badly written and unimportant.
