I just recently purchased a 3 year old house and for the first time since I have had the house, I went to turn on the shower upstairs and there was a low rumbling and shaking through out the house. So I wen to shower downstairs and everything was fine. What is going on???

Some pipes are having shock absorbers, it is a buffer system that absorbs the pressure of the water when the water leads from a bigger pipe to a smaller...like the suspensions of the car, or motorbike...You should install one of this between the pipe and the shower battery so they absorb the pressure Resistance. the pipes are shaking because of the Resistance in pressure when the larger pipe contracts into a smaller pipe...Dont panic that can be solved easily and cheap, i am sorry i dont know the right terms in english i am not a plummer i am ch. engineer... But contact a plummer dont be fooled it will not cost much...

I think it is called water hammer...It can also depend on a loose pipe..

Anyhow it can be fixed easy

Sounds like the water pipes either became loose from the wall or they are going to need replacing. Jessica I highly doubt a date is going to solve shaking water pipes. Seriously!

the pipe was not properly strapped to the wall.. it has come loose under the presure... you can fix it,.. but it requires you to rip the sheetrock down to get to the pipe.....

once the sheet rock is out of the way you can do a few different things.. the easiest is finding the bracket... ( if they put one on it) that held it in place and fixing it... or putting one back in...or
wrapping the pipe in insulation... the pipe will still shake but the insulation will buff it so it makes no sound...

I suggest fixing the bracket... and placing insulation wrap around the pipe...

its ok , it happens to us too, there is air in the pipes and the pressure causes the shaking, it will eventually go
