fear is a natural reaction to stuff, phobia's are normally a result of our social environment, most people who have a phobia of spiders have a parent who is also afraid, we learned this behavior from that parent.

it can also be a result of a bad experience, if you are hurt or traumatized by something you become afraid, this is a instinct to stop us getting hurt over and over, that's why people are scared of fire, because otherwise they'd get killed.

I'm scared of spiders, and escalators. my Mam is scared of spiders as well, and i nearly got dragged into an escalator when i was a kid.

I think I'm scared of spiders because when I was about three/four my mum used to insist that I come in the house through the conservatory which had attracted hundreds of Daddy Long-legs and I didn't like too as they fly blindly at you! Strange that I don't care about these now, but I have a screaming blue fit if i see a spider!!!!!!!!!!

Fear is there to protect us. I watched a programme about it. E.g, you trap your finger in a door when you are a toddler, you know not to put your finger in a door again right? Your brain puts all doors in the same category so you know from now on all doors can hurt your fingers. Sometimes this can become inflated and the same instinct can kick in with anything. I have a fear of birds because once a seagull attacked me for some bread i had, i have put all birds in the same category as the seagull and hate all birds now. This works for anything, my friends husband is scared of buttons! When he was a toddler he choked on one, the fear started when his brain told him all buttons were dangerous. Interesting eh?

I think we are scared of things because it is a part of life. If we weren't scared of anything , we would be dangerous to ourselves ;) I am personally scared of Ghosts, and aliens... they creep me out... I don't know why but just the thought of them does... I don't like mirrors either.... they creep me out.

I think sometimes we are afraid of the unknown, sometimes our fears stem from growing up and what we learned to fear. Other times it's because of an experience we've had that scared us and we carry that with us. What am I afraid of? Spiders and snakes. I don't trust either one not to bite me, that's why. lol

I have a fear of dead spiders I am not even sure there is a rational explanation why but, I do know it developed after I got together with my husband and he is petrified of live ones, giving me the horrible task of killing them if I have to.
