1. Select the cell
2. Click Format -> Cell
3. In the Number tab, select "Custom"
4. In the entry field on the right type the following, making sure you include the quotes:
#","##","###
5. Click OK

Why would you want to, since that doesn't match any system I know of.
The simplist answer, if you must, is to convert the number to a string and then either break it up into columns and merge the columns or use string functions to display it.
B1: =TEXT(A1, "General")
C1: =MID(B1,1,1)&","&MID(B1,2,2)
&","&MID(B1,4,3) (broken only to keep Yahoo from hiding part of it.
All of the answers that say use Custom - The directions don't work "#","##","###" shows #,##,### instead of the number and without the leading quote produces an error.

select the column or the area you want to format. Select the drop down menu format, select cells, select Number, click 1000 seperator, select O.K. The area you selected will get these seperator

Follow these steps...
1)Right click on the cell >> a dialogue box appears.
2)Select number from category
3)mark the checkbox saying "use 1000 seperaters(,)"
And u'll get it done as u wanted...

Go to "start" then find "setting", choose "control panel" in the control panel select "regional setting" then select tab "numbers", in this window you can select number appearance (forth box from top.)
