People clearly have not thought about the implications of re-writing history any major changes could have a dramatic and not necessarily beneficial effect on the world as it is now. One change in the wrong place could even mean that you would not exist today. So if I was to re-write history I would make that change very small and in the recent past like; Lady Diana does not die.

I couldn't stop with just one! certainly re-write 9/11 - make sure it didn't happen

Do you mean change how it really happened? - or just re-"write the story" and tell that it happened a different way?

you mean - re-write - make a bad thing from history not happen.

like for instance:

slavery - I'm talking Bible times slavery - if you could put a stop to slavery at it's very roots - would civilization have had all the trouble with slavery all the way to present day?

Hitler - that's a very big one - stop that madman before he began.

or War - any war - take your pick - WW1, WW2, Korea, Viet Nam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq

9/11

you couldn't re-write just one thing without disturbing a lot of other things that followed which might be interesting.

I can't imagine... what difference it would make. How different would things be, by changing one thing. if you could -

of course you could re-write it and create a lie about the event - even though it didn't happen that way.

there are too many people who know exactly what did really happen to just write a different story about what happened.

consider all the after effects... it would be a shock to many lives.

several great answers kudos to all, even the ones who said my birthday, but i think i can do a little bit better, and in my answer please know I'm only joking i don't really mean what i say, its just for a laugh and to see who is going to laugh with me.

i would go and rewrite the time of the real Vlad the Impaler, not only would he have won against the Turks and all his enemies, he then would have defeated the Church and the nobles in his home land. and seeing as how know he has total control, he and he army would have spread like wild fire through all of Europe conquering everything they came across.

the best part about this is by the time Bram would be born, writing a book about Vlad would be illegal. no Dracula, no vampires, no mall goths, no hot topic, no wanna be's playing live action vampire games killing each other and their families cause they think its real.

Changing even one tiny little thing alters everything from that point forward (read 'The Delicate Sound of Thunder' by Ray Bradbury), so I suppose I would go for as early an opportunity as possible.

Maybe if Adam & Eve had said:
"Look, we're real sorry about the apple, but you didn't really explain the full ramifications of eating it - don't you think you're overreacting just a tad?"

Perhaps then everything would've worked out fine!
