What is the idea behind "election ban"?

I applied for a job in our local government and they told me that they're gonna put my application in pending until June when there's no more 'election ban." Why can't they hire me and let me wait for 2 months? Gosh I need a job right away? Can't we just get rid of this "election ban" thing?

Government jobs are not open during election time to prevent candidates from using their position for campaigning just like hiring prospective voters.

The idea is if an opposing party is elected you could just end up losing your job. There is also the factor of cost. Look for a job in the private sector. .
