Dr Dave bilirubin is the answer according to the medicine book we are given to learn at the Stockholm's University, this is the color substance that gives this brown color, i agree with you...The indole acetic acid is a tryptophan metabolite, such as tryptamin serotonin, FICZ...etc and so the color of the poop should be depended on the tryptophan diet? is it...If it is then the evil professor is right! You should experiment on you self, and publish the results to prove the evil professor wrong!

Seems I remember something a professor once said during a lecture; "Indole acetic acid gives feces its characteristic color and odor." However, the bile which is excreted by the liver into the gut, as stated above, comes from breakdown of red blood cells plus toxins produced by the body. This bile is yellowish-brown in color; after it is concentrated in its trip down the gut, it becomes more brownish. As to which one specifically contributes more, I don't know. I'd suspect the bilirubin more, simply because I didn't like that professor, anyway.

due to pigments result from red blood cells destruction at the end of its life span
Bilirubin is a yellow breakdown product of normal heme catabolism. Its levels are elevated in certain diseases and it is responsible for the yellow color of bruises and the brown color of feces. Bilirubin reduction in the gut leads to a product called urobilinogen, which is excreted in urine.
