For me, it's that I might not be understood. It is also a self defense mechanism. I don't want to cry in public because in some way that would be giving others possible control of my life. It probably dates back to the stone age genetics or something, very primal, but it's like giving someone ammunition that they might well use against you. If you understand what point I'm trying to get at here.

It's not the fact that I care what people think of me (I really couldn't care less), but the fact I can't control my own emotions which I try so hard to suppress so I cant feel the pain!

Others may become uncomfortable and react in ways that seem distant...even some close family may react this way...it only puts up walls...so , I avoid crying in public...it's a private thing for me

I have become my Mother if I allowed myself to cry in public. She was always so overwrought and emotional. I was always embarrassed b/c she created drama where ever she went. I want to be in control, yet...I have cried in public. It's in the genes...

Not ashamed to cry... I cry with laughter, cry with sadness, cry with anger...
Not ashamed... but I try to reserve the sadness and anger tears for private times... what I do affects others...

It's due more to the fact that most people don't find puffy eyes, a red nose, and a face smeared with tears and snot, particularly attractive.
