I truly do appreciate the help, but I am still a bit confused. I think if I try it one more time, I will have it down. My new problem is:

-7z+4-z=-12

Now, I understand what you had said about combining the like terms. So -7z and z need to be combined. The only thing is that I am not sure how to combine them. Would it be -6z or
-8z, or am I completely wrong on both. I tried to do the problem myself, but I made a mistake somewhere. I would be thankful if anyone could assist me by telling me where I went wrong in my work. The following is how I thought the equation should be worked out:

-7z+4 - z= -12
-6z+4= -12
-6z = -16
z= - 2.66666666..............

I am almost positive that I have made a mistake somewhere, but i am just unable to locate it. Please help me locate my mistake, as well as tell me how to correct it. Thankyou so much!!

It should be -8z, not -6z..

-8z + 4 = -12

-8z = -16

then your second mistake was when you divided the -16 by -6, and mistakenly got a negative answer. It should have been positive.

-6z = -16 (it should be -8z so I'll correct that first)

-8z = -16 (now you divide by -8)

z = 2 (the negatives on both sides cancel, so it is a positive number)

6+4 means that you have a +6 and a +4;
all you have to do is move 6 points to the right (+6), then move again 4 points to the right, and you will be 10points to the right (+10)

-7-1 means that you have a -7 and a -1
so you move 7 points to the left, then move again 1 to the left which will give you 8 points to the left (-8)

-10 + 3 means that you have a -10 and a +3;
move 10 points to the left then 3 to the right and you will arrive at 7 points to the left (-7), OR:
move 3 points to the right then move 10 points to the left and arrive at 7 points to the left

as a rule; -7-1 = -7 + -1, then you add numbers with the same sign which is 7+1 = 8 but do not forget their common negative sign so it should be -8

6 minus -4 ; here you encounter a minus operation of numbers with different sign, what you do is change minus to plus and reverse the sign of the number to be subtracted; so this is actually 6 plus + 4 = 10

Now think of the number line:-
-7 - 1 means that you go 7 left and then 1 left .
this takes you to 8 left i.e. - 8
Similarly - 12 - 4 means that you go 12 left and then 4 left and this takes you to 16 left i.e. - 16
- 8z = - 16
- 8 x 2 = - 16 so:-
z = 2
OR if - 8z = - 16
8z = 16
z = 2

When working with negative numbers think of it this way... you owe someone 7 z's (z's in this case but it could be money or another variable). Then you borrow another z, how many z's do you now owe this person? you owe 8 total z's so your equation would read -8z+4=-12. Other than that you have the steps of the process correct!!!
