Ya - one of those crazy questions based on our weird English language.
The word 'apartment' is derived from old latin (which then became Italian and French) where the word, 'apartare' means separate - denoting a separate dwelling place.

Because no one would want to live in them if they called them by there actual name which is rat trap, hole in the wall, hell hole need I go on so you see they have to call them apartments to trick people I mean no one would want to live in them if they knew what they really were

Why do they call it "freeways" or "expressways" when it's bumper to bumper?
Why do they call it "parkways" when you drive in them?
