I was wondering this because theres a blizzard where i am and the power keeps going off and on.

i was wondering why this happens not just in the winter storms but in the summer when there are thunder storms too.

Because most power lines are up on the telephone poles, they are exposed to the weather conditions. Snow and ice storms cause water to freeze on the wires and the weight can break them. High winds can blow the wires together and when they touch each other it causes a breaker or fuse to trip. Cars loose control in snow and ice storms and crash into telephone poles, knocking them over or causing the wires to break.
During summer ligntening storms ightening strikes the highest object around which is often the telephone poles, causing breakers and fuses to trip.

If lightning or wind takes down a power line or a step down transformer on the pole the lights go out till a crew goes out to fix it...additionally there are breakers on the poles that trip too if there is a short...sometimes the power company just needs to reset the breakers.

That's because it is the consequence of a thunderstorm...It happens sometimes, the lightening streaks in a power plant or power station, I suppose that's the reason...Another reason could be prevention of such a strike by switching off a power station during heavy electrical storms !
