I think if you check (not sure how) you will find that doctors learned like apprentices - that is there was no degree in medicine, but the study of medicine was part of hospital training and upon completion the certification was awarded. The 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica is on line and may have something. Or you might do it backward and look at medical training programs now in existence at older colleges and see when they were established.
Based on current practice, about 4-6 years.
