It depends on my first language, and how good I am at other languages.
If your first language is english, a Romance language is a good bet since there will be many simularities... these would include italian and spanish.
However an often overlooked secondary language that can be very helpfull and requires no skill in pronunciation is American Sign Language. Additionally if you become profecient in it it could lead to career opportunities in translation for the hearing impared, where as a language like spanish is very common and it's not difficult to find someone that speaks english and spanish.
Another interesting option would be to learn Arabic which again can lead to career opportunities given then current level of ....... involvement in the Arab nations.
Personally when I had to choose a language, I went with German but that was because it was either French, German, or Spanish.

I already know a little bit of quite a few languages, and know Spanish the best of these. Instead of picking a totally new language to learn, I'd like to improve my Swedish. Then I could surprise some people there; they practically all speak English but don't expect foreigners to speak their language.

Technically, my second language was English - after Italian.
Now I want to take Japanese. It sounds so cool.
