A transvestite is: a person and especially a male who adopts the dress and often the behavior typical of the opposite sex especially for purposes of emotional or sexual gratification.

A Transvestite is a person who gets a sexual kick out of wearing the other gender's clothes - it's a fetish. They could be straight, gay or bi. There is no correlation between transvestism and and being gay; it's the whole idea of "gender identity" vs. "sexual preference" ("who you are" vs. "who you like").
... and FYI:
Cross-dresser - usually straight; generally does it for emotional comfort
Transsexual - The "born in the wrong body" people.
Transgendered - a blanket term that covers all of the aforementioned.

transvestite: typically used to describe a man that dresses as a woman. They can be of any orientation just like any other person. Crossdresser is basically the same thing.

A "Transvestite" is the medical term for someone who is a Crossdresser.
A Crossdresser is someone who wears the clothing of the opposite sex for enjoyment, relaxation and for gender expression. Most Crossdressers are heterosexual.

No....a transvestite is some one who's gender identity does not match their body....also a transvestite can be gay/straight/ or bi........Sexual Orientation is not the same thing as Trans-gender.......
Essenitally---yes.....but they go further like living as the opposite sex for the rest of their life.....its not just an act .....they can have hormone therapy and get the opposite sex's hormone through a doctor (estrogen/ testosterone).....
They can also be gay...sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't.....like me I'm Bi....
