The question is:

What is the next number in the following pattern?
1/2, 1/4, 1/9, .........

This is tough and I would LOVE to hear the answer... the only thing I can think of is 1/16 because ...

2^2 =4, then 3^2=9, then 4^2=16

(^2 means "squared")

So perhaps they are moving up ONE in the number they are squaring? Good luck!!!

Are you sure it's not two pairs instead of a solid sequence? 1/2 is to 1/4 as 1/9 is to...1/18

I can't see anyone giving a 6th grader anything much harder.

1/2, 1/4, 1/9, 1/16, ... , 1/(2^n), ...

1 1/(2^1) = 1/2

2 1/(2^2) = 1/4

3 1/(2^3) = 1/16
