I personally consider myself an independant conservative. I do not particularly agree with many of the things that the Republican party does, agree though as I do with their values. I also am equally surprised at the number of mindless drones who are fanatically bound to either the far right or the far left. I have my opinion on why this is but I was wondering what other people think.

I'm a moderate Independent. I don't particularly feel "slammed" but I do feel pigeonholed at times. I get tired of the far right claiming anyone who doesn't agree with Bush is a liberal. I get tired of the far left going over the top and calling Bush "Hitler" and claiming 9/11 was an inside job. As a moderate I've rejected the Republican Party as a result of the last six years and voted a straight Democratic ticket for the first time in my memory at the mid-terms. It's funny but I find myself simply dismissing the far left as looney crackpots, but I'm disappointed in the far right for being lemmings - somehow I expected more from them. They have their heads stuck in Middle Eastern sand deep enough to hit their backbones and their jeering at anyone who actually applies logic to the Iraq problem is disturbing, to say the least.

I consider myself to be far to the right but do not blindly vote for Republicans.
Many of my votes go to Democrats but this is on a local level and I am sure that this is based on where I live which is northeast PA.
Most of my family and friends vote the D party ticket.
I bust them for this on a regular basis.
In the area I live I do not see moderates getting abused.
To tell you the truth though, I do not know many who identify themselves as moderates.
Maybe they are the people who do not jump in when politics are discussed but no one really accosts them around here.

Far right doesn't want the moderate view-period. So they've ran all over you in the past decade.
Democrats really have seen the moderate republicans cave in so know that as far as the right wing is in power the moderates are going to stay silent.
It is going to take years to rebuild the moderate base -just as it took the Democrats to from their far left take over years ago.

As a self professed ex-republican who moved hard to the center along with many of my friends, I don't feel that the vocal extremists have much if anything at all to say about independents.

They tend to target extremes rather than moderation. That, and a fear of alienating possible support for issues they would need help on.

I know the language of the reactionary from thirty years of listening to the squeaky wheels, demanding attention they don't deserve.

Great finally a person who is striving for the middle ground I agree with you whole heartedly I myself am a Christian yet absolutely despise republicans and almost everything they stand for I praise you for not leaning for left or far right. Here is a metaphor think of it like a tree if you lean far to the left or to the right you'll either get snapped off in the wind or just not reach your full potential where as if grow straight in the middle you can achieve your full potential. Thinking in black and white terms is what is really holding this country back life is lived in the gray areas. P.S the war in Iraq is unnecessary and foolish

I am with you on this one. I just want to know how the democratic party got hijacked by communists, and why the far right evangelists can't elect a decent moderate candidate.

I consider myself moderate as well, and what happens is when you take a stand on a particular issue, people will label you as one or the other. That is the issue with many people in this country today. You are labeled as one or the other, you cannot be anything in between.

In my opinion, there isn't a black and white answer to everything, and until those people who think like that realize there is gray to issues and to thoughts, people will continue to labeled.

So should an asker be able to refer to all other users (except one other so-called Conservative Independent, who is neither) as "mindless drones," and just expect niceties? LOL

Lower your expectations. This is Yahoo.
