It distracts them from their emotional pain

or, as Trent Reznor put it: "I hurt myself today to see if I still feel"

Some people will say that by cutting themselves they felt as if they are getting something out that they otherwise could not. It's a cry for a solution. They may feel as though they have no other options or no one to understand them. They need some guidance. Big clue they need some psychological help.

Most are looking for a new access for the pain or attention... Some think that if they hurt physically, they won't think about the things that hurt them emotionally. They usually just have a problem of dealing with the things in life that they see as hurting them or stressing them out. Others do it for attention, in that people seem to react in a caring way toward them if they find that they hurt themselves. They really just need someone to talk to and help them to find other solutions for the way that they are feeling and dealing with others in their lives...

it depends on who you ask. some people do it for attention, but obviously there is something severely wrong if they resort to that for attention and it should be addressed by family or friends.

some say it's easier to deal with physical pain than emotional pain.

some say they cut to feel something because they have gone "numb".

everyone has a different reason and a different trigger.

For several reasons, most commonly to see if they can feel anything at all, it is an attempt to punish oneself and expresses a contempt of self. One person told me that it was an attempt to let the bad person out. People who do this have been sexually and physically abused, they have learned to over control or deny their emotions. They really want to "let it all out." They punish themselves when they feel bad.

When done on purpose, it's a need for control and outlet for a myriad of frustrations or pain. It is also a psychological condition requiring immediate medical intervention.

We have been going through this with my nephew. I talked to him about it and he said sometimes he feels numb to the world and when he gets depressed and cuts himself at least he can feel something. It is very sad and dangerous. My nephew is finally in treatment for it. It is really a cry for help.
