Tell her the truth. Now would also be a perfect time for the sex talk, since now she's fertile. Be open and honest, and let her ask questions. Use the internet for references. Good luck.

My mom told me something forgettable, but the 5h grade girls had a movie about it every year at my school, and they told everyone, so we all knew the facts pretty early.
I saw a children's book about it at a friend's house that was excellent. I no longer know the name of it, but it was put out in the early 1970s, so it might be a real search to find it. Perhaps someone else has done one, or an organization like Planned Parenthood might have a pamphlet with guidelines for you. If you don't make it sound miserable, it shouldn't be too bad. Leave yourself open for questions, and don't overanswer each question, I'm sure you'll be fine.

My mother never told me! I started at school, and was so embarrassed it took 2 days to tell my mom. I have already talked to my daughter about it. And told her it is part of becoming a woman. She was kind of like what ever, and I left it at when you want to talk I will be here.

Believe it or not my dad was the one that told me about it..He drew a picture of a rose and said how each petal falls that is kind of a way a female body works every month..and how at the end of the month each month I was going to get something called a period...and so on...He explained it gently not to shock me...my mom was too embarrased to tell me..

I have two girls 9 and 10 yrs old. As they have grown, they saw that i had a period and would ask questions. Like why are you bleeding. I told them the truth, like my mother told me. I explained to them that, as a lady gets older her body starts to change to get ready to hold a baby. And if the lady does not get pregnant, then she has to get rid of the liner that has formed to hold the baby. This happens every month. This answer seemed to answer and satisfy their questions.

That's a bit personal.
I'm wary of people who come on here asking for stories and getting off on it. A trend that seems to be increasing.
I think you should just sit down and answer your daughter's questions as honestly as you can. It will be fine.

My mom did not tell me. At school they took all of the 5th grade girls to watch a film about it and gave us supplies. My mom was too ashamed to speak of it

my mom always started by telling me to tell her if i ever find blood in my panties to come get her and let her know. she told me that it was nothing bad but that it was my period starting and it would be something that would happen every month. she also explained to me sort of what was happening and why it happened. and it was hard explaining it to me because i started when i was ten. hope this helps

my mother was very closed mouth about everything i had to learn from school and girlfriends. the only thing i can tell you is to be very open with her, i have been open with my son about everything pretty much from the day he was born, he's 16 and not embarrassed to talk about anything with me because of that. don't be afraid to open up to her you won't reget it, i hope this somewhat helps you.
